Overactive Bladder

Overactive bladder is a syndrome of urinary urgency. Patients usually experience increased urgency and frequency during both daytime and nighttime. Some may also suffer from urinary incontinence. It is more common in female than in male, posing negative impacts on the mental and physical well-beings of patients.

Anticholinergics
Anticholinergics are helpful in relaxing the bladder in order to relieve urinary symptoms. Tolterodine and Solifenacin are uroselective anticholinergics preferred for patients with overactive bladder, particularly the elderly. Tolterodine is short-acting while Solifenacin is long-acting. Both are well-tolerated with less dry mouth than Oxybutynin, an older anticholinergic.

Lifestyles modifications should be considered even with oral medication. Patients should avoid fluids before bedtime or before going out and reduce the consumption of mild diuretics that may increase their urge to urinate, e.g. caffeine and alcohol.
